I was out with a bunch of nestie girls last night.  We started talking about the weirdness of the the families we married into.  And boy, were there some strange stories!

I’m a bit lucky that most of my DH’s family is in India or we’d have ALL SORTS of stories to tell…believe me, after meeting them, they have their own particular level of oddness.  So all I have is a MIL and FIL.  And overall, they are wonderful people.  I mean they are letting us stay here and take over their house for months.  But that doesn’t mean that they don’t have any quirks that I just shake my head over.  Here are a few examples:

  • They will not get anyone over to fix things.  They try to fix it all themselves.  Right now the washing machine is pouring out water onto their parquet floor.  Are they calling someone in?  Nope, we’re still using it with a towel under the machine.  And that towel is SOAKED by the end of the cycle.
  • Have you ever heard a little kid eat.  You know those noises they make, sorta ‘um,yum, erm,um’?  That is the sound of my FIL.  One of his many sounds he makes throughout the day and night.  One night I heard a noise and my DH went next door to turn off my FIL’s t.v.  It wasn’t the t.v. – it was dad.  As I thought.
  • My MIL doesn’t eat around us.  She cooks amazing meals and then has the same thing every night – cheese on toast, yogurt and one other thing…all in the smallest plate or container she can use.  Eating issues are present.
  • They HAVE to do certain things on certain days.  For example, even though my DH was getting surgery and we were hoping to get a ride from my MIL back from the hospital, my MIL still did her Friday morning shop.  I called a few times and no one answered as she was out and my FIL doesn’t wear his hearing aid during the day (another oddness).  So we ended up finding out own way back home.

I do love my ILs and they are great.  But like any family member, they have their own weirdness (I don’t even want to begin to talk about my parents!).  I’m sure I have a weirdness or two that someday someone will write about (or perhaps have already).
